New look Skopje AirportConstruction at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is in full swing as the Turkish TAV, the operator of Macedonia’s main airport, delivers good on its initial promise. TAV presented its plans for the new terminal which will be on par with international standards. A total of six air bridges will connect the terminal building with aircraft. Restaurants and shops will feature prominently in the building, together with twenty three check-in desks, an increase compared to the current eight. A total of 1.200 vehicles will be able to use the airport’s parking which will be connected to the highway heading into the Macedonian capital. If all goes to plan, the new building should be open by the end of 2011, the “Sitel” portal reports. Recently, a new building for the airport’s fire department was completed, which is part of the multi million Euro project.

Several months ago TAV announced that a cargo building would also be built at the airport and the runway lengthened, in order to handle larger aircraft. Meanwhile, Ohrid’s St. Paul the Apostle Airport will also go under complete reconstruction and modernization with a new car park, cargo building and VIP section to be built. The project in Ohrid would take a year to be completed.

London Southend Airport set for expansion

Aircraft maintenance

Local companies such as ATC Lasham, Inflite (aircraft maintenance), Avionicare (aircraft avionics) and Air Livery (specialist aircraft painters) have successfully drawn airlines and aircraft owners from all over the world who fly to the airport to benefit from local skills and expertise.

The airport is now beginning to build upon this solid base. Southend and Rochford Councils, Thames Gateway and the Government-backed regeneration company, Renaissance Southend have identified the airport as a key part of regeneration in Southend.

Current Projects

A new railway station for Southend Airport

Detailed planning permissions were granted in 2004 for a new on-site airport railway station, replacement terminal building and new car park. The station is due to open in December 2009 and would be in addition to the existing stations at Rochford and Prittlewell.

The railway station will enable in-bound passengers to use the fast and frequent services direct to Stratford for Docklands and Canary Wharf, and to central London’s Liverpool Street Station, making the airport more attractive for commercial airlines. This will also reduce the need to travel to the airport by car, reducing road traffic.

We are at the very last stages of technical approval for the railway station with Network Rail and have agreed timescales with them for work to take place during 2009. While the programme is tight, we are on target to open the new station in late 2009 and we will be calling on the expertise of Stobart Rail for much of the infrastructure work.

Terminal refurbishment

Refurbishment of the existing terminal building has taken place over the past few months. We now have an extended departure lounge with new café and more check-in desks for passengers when they arrive at the airport. In the near future we will be making further improvements to our popular coffee shop and the business jet passenger facility.

Southend Airport hotel

Southend Council’s Development Control Committee granted outline planning permission in October 2007 for a new four-star 130-bedroom hotel. The hotel, likely to be operated by Ramada, will cost £6.5m and include a restaurant, bar and conference facilities.

The airport is at the last stages of concluding arrangements with Ramada for the construction and opening of a brand new 130 bed hotel which is currently scheduled to start on site in Spring 2009 and open in mid 2010.

Airport control tower

A new control tower is proposed for the airport, creating a new building in a better position to have a view of the whole airport and operating facilities. The location has been agreed and construction of the tower is scheduled to start in late 2009.

Additional projects completed in 2008

In addition to our previously published plans, behind the scenes infrastructure is also getting a makeover. The airport has completely replaced the fuelling infrastructure, installing four new state-of-the-art airport fuel tanks and dispensing systems to ensure a high quality well controlled environment for fuel.

In addition we have resurfaced a major part of a taxiway, installed new runway access safety equipment, built a new secure car park for a further 200 cars and made changes to the airport layout, improving safety.

There are 5 car parks at the Bordeaux Airport. They are:

PR – AKA ‘ArrĂȘt minute’ for dropping off and picking up. First 20 minutes are free. Less than 1-2 hours parking is comparable in price to the other car parks, over that watch out! Has 125 spaces and is the closest car park to the airport.

P0 – Covered car park 344 spaces.

P1 – 1,610 spaces and about 200 metres from the terminal. Priced for parking for less than 3 days Weekend special

P2 - 1,730 spaces, priced for 3-5 days parking.

P4 – 1,167 spaces, priced for long term parking. P4 is the car park farthest from the terminal. There is a shuttle the runs between the terminal and P4 every 15 minutes. Shuttle runs from 5 am to 11 pm. The shuttle leaves from the departures (upper) level, just look for the signs.

When you arrive at the airport the car parks are well marked.

Payment can be made when you exit any car park or at the payment machines inside the terminal. When you enter any car park you take a ticket. Don’t lose this ticket as you will need it to make payment when you exit.

At any car park exit payment can only be made with a CB – ‘Carte bancaire’. At the payment machines inside the airport it’s possible to pay with CB, American Express and cash (coins or bank notes). The machines explain how to make payment. Once payment is made you have fifteen minutes to exit.

Parking your car on the airport car park is considered by many to offer the ultimate in convenience. Indeed, you are right on the doorstep of the airport meaning a short walk to departures and a short walk back from the arrivals hall. Security is tight in all UK airports and the car parks are generally considered to be extremely safe, so your car is parked at relatively low risk of damage or theft.

The biggest drawback of on-airport car parking is the COST! Beware, aside from valet car parking, on-airport parking is the most expensive option to chose from. You are paying for the convenience of being close to the airport, and the closer you are the more you will pay.

If you do chose to park your car on the airports car park do your research before hand and there are a couple of points you should follow:

1. Make a note of the Terminal you are flying from

For large airports take a note of the terminal building you are flying from. You need to ensure you park in the car park closest to that particular terminal because in airports the as large as Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester if you park in the wrong terminal you face a lengthy walk (or run).

2. Do you need Shot Stay or Long Stay Parking?

This may seem obvious, but many passengers will simply select the first car park they find upon arrival at the airport. As a general rule, if you are planning to park your car for more than 24 hours you should always opt for the Long Stay car park. Indeed, by searching for deals in the long stay car park you may find that for stays as short as 12 hours you it still makes more financial sense to book long-stay.

The long stay and short stay car parks are often located close to the terminal buildings, so in terms of walking distance there is generally nothing to be saved by booking short stay.

3. Book in advance

If you have the luxury of time then you should always book your on-airport parking in advance. If you turn up on the day without a reservation you will be required to pay the full advertised rate, regardless of which car park you select. You will almost certainly be paying over the odds for this, as there are a number of great deals available if you pre-book.

Croatia could soon get its first low cost airline. Plans are being put in motion for a new low cost carrier to be created by the end of the year, the daily “24 sata” reports. The project is being headed by Ćœeljko Romić, a Croat from Australia. He plans for his low cost airline to operate a mixed fleet of short haul Airbus and Boeing aircraft, an unorthodox move for a low cost carrier. Furthermore, Romić plans for his airline to operate seasonal long haul flights to the United States with Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft. Local media report that Romić has found vital financial backing for his ambitious project. The airline would also operate domestic flights and could be a rival to Croatia Airlines.

Wizz Air to open Belgrade base


Wizz Air to open Belgrade baseEastern Europe’s largest low cost airline, Wizz Air, will open its thirteenth base at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport on April 1, 2011, the airline’s CEO, Jozsef Varadi, announced yesterday in Belgrade. One of the airline’s Airbus A320s will be based at Serbia’s main airport operating flights to Dortmund, London-Luton, Rome, Malmo, Memmingen, Eindhoven and Stockholm-Skavsta. Flights to Dortmund and London, which commenced this summer, have been extremely successful with cabin loads exceeding 90% per flight. The no frills airline will commence flights to Belgrade from Rome and Malmo in Sweden from December. These flights will originate from Belgrade once the A320 is based at the airport in April. Flights to Stockholm, Memmingen and Eindhoven in the Netherlands will begin between April 1 and 3.

At a press conference in Belgrade, Varadi announced that between thirty to forty workers from Serbia will be employed by the airline. “It is our goal to become the leading airline in Serbia”, he said. He also believes the new move will have a positive impact on the Serbian economy. It is anticipated that Wizz Air will carry some 300.000 passengers to and from Serbia in 2011.

B&H on the rise


B&H on the riseMore flights, more aircraft and, most importantly, more passengers have seen B&H Airlines record a 202% passenger increase in the first half of 2010 compared to the same period last year. In the second quarter of the year, the airline carried 36.933 passengers, an increase of 90% compared to the second quarter 2009. The increase is somewhat lighter than that recorded in the first quarter when passenger figures increased by 133%. However, while the number of flights increased 46% in the first quarter, flight operations increased by only 4% in the second, making the second quarter passenger increase more remarkable. In the second quarter, a total of 429 scheduled flights were operated and 44 charters were carried out. The airline recorded an average load factor of 78%, making it the highest in the EX-YU region.

The national carrier of Bosnia and Herzegovina carried a total of 54.191 passengers in the first six months of the year. The upcoming month of August is traditionally the airline’s busiest month. In 2009, B&H Airlines carried a total of 87.158 passengers.

Meanwhile, B&H Airlines will finally receive its long awaited Airbus A319 jet on August 1. However, current booking systems show that the Boeing B737-700 will be arriving instead. You can read more details on the new arrival here on Sunday, August 1.

Turkish takeover rumoured


Turkish takeover rumouredYet another takeover in the EX-YU region, orchestrated by Turkish Airlines, is being rumoured. Croatian media report that the Turkish national carrier is interested in purchasing the struggling Croatia Airlines, its Star Alliance partner. Srećko Ć imeunović, the head of Croatia Airlines marketing, says that he is unaware of any interest on Turkish Airlines’ behalf because it hasn’t been decided whether the airline will be privatised but adds that any interest on Turkish’ behalf show that Croatia Airlines has value. Speaking to the “Večernji list”, Ć imeunović says that Croatia Airlines is reporting financial losses and therefore plans to cut its work force and fleet (despite the fact that the airline recently purchased new aircraft and has more on order).

Earlier this year, the CEO of Croatia Airlines said that the carrier’s only saviour from bankruptcy was swift privatisation. Lufthansa was rumoured to be interested in the airline but the German carrier denied such claims several months ago. This year, Croatia Airlines is loosing its grip on the Croatian market, unable to fight again low cost airlines. Of particular concern to the carrier is the arrival of low cost airlines in Zagreb.

Turkish Airlines owns 49% of B&H Airlines and is the front runner in the purchase of Jat Airways.

Zagreb Airport As July draws to a close, all of Croatia’s main airports have reported their passenger figures for June 2010 and the news is good. All of Croatia’s airports reported increased passenger numbers with the exception of Rijeka, which continues to struggle not only financially but passenger wise as well.

The biggest passenger increase, when compared to the same month last year, was recorded in Zadar. The airport handled 33.838 passengers last month, an increase of 36.4%. Also doing well were Osijek and Dubrovnik with the airports reporting an 18.1% and 12.2% increase respectively. Osijek’s result should be particularly noted because the airport saw aircraft movement fall by 30.7%, when compared to June 2010. Split handled 154.776 passengers compared to 147.865 and thus recorded a 4.6% increase. Out of all of the airports reporting growth this June, Zagreb saw an increase of only 1.4%, handling 200.515 passengers.

TAV has announced that all construction work is on schedule and meeting deadlines . The airport posted good results this June as passenger numbers increased by 17% compared to the same month last year.
